What are your options above 100 inches?

You have four choices at large scale: LED video walls, LCD video walls, projection and large-format displays.

An LED video wall is built from modular LED cabinets that tile together with no visible join. An LCD video wall grids commercial panels together, so you always see bezel lines.

Projection throws an image onto a distant surface, and needs clear metres between lens and wall. A large-format display is a single panel. It tops out around 98 inches, and past that size you are choosing between the other three.

Two measures come up throughout the table below. Brightness is in nits. Pixel density is in pixels per inch (PPI), and P-numbers like P1.5 are the gap in millimetres between one pixel centre and the next.

Two columns matter more than the rest: brightness and shape. Check those first, and you will usually be left comparing one or two options rather than four.

Why does ambient light decide most Australian installs?

The light already in your space sets the brightness you need, so check it before you compare anything else. It’s vital you assess the space at its worst, not its best. A showroom demo at 5pm tells you nothing about a north-facing shopfront at 2pm in February, or a terminal with full-height glazing behind the screen. Walk the space at its brightest hour, because that is what your screen has to cope with for the next decade.

How many nits you need depends entirely on the light already in the room. An LCD wall at 500 nits looks excellent in a showroom and washes out completely behind glass.

Projection has the same problem, only worse, because the image competes with the light landing on the screen. LED is the only one of the four that holds up in direct sun.

We specified high-brightness LED for Lotte Duty Free at Melbourne Airport. Terminal glare would have washed out anything dimmer. We used the same approach for the column screens and departure displays at Perth Airport. If your space is dim and stays dim, ambient light is not your constraint. Boardrooms, cinemas and training spaces all have controlled light by design.

Our team takes that reading before specifying a brightness level. Once you have the number, two or three of the four options are usually off the table.

When is projection still the right call?

Projection suits controlled-light rooms, temporary installs, and very large images on a tight budget.

A laser projector and a good screen will cover a wall for a fraction of what the equivalent LED costs. If you can control the light in the room, take the saving. Modern laser projectors run around 20,000 hours with no lamp changes. Pair one with an ambient-light-rejecting screen and it handles more room light than most people expect.

Most of projection’s bad reputation comes from installs that skipped that pairing: an underspecified projector, a mismatched screen, and a washed-out image everyone blamed on the technology.

Projection also suits anything temporary. If the install comes down in a month, you are not amortising LED over five years. Where projection falls down is permanence in a lit space. You will replace the projector twice in the time an LED wall runs untouched.

Where does LCD still beat LED?

LCD wins on pixel density, packing far more pixels per inch than any commercially priced LED wall.

Pixel density decides how close someone can stand before the image falls apart into dots. A 55-inch 1080p panel runs about 40 pixels per inch, and the same panel in 4K runs about 80. A P1.5 LED wall manages roughly 17.

That gap is why LED suits rooms people walk through, and LCD suits rooms people sit in.

Matching a plain 1080p panel needs about P0.6. Matching 4K puts you near P0.3, which is micro-LED pricing and rarely justifiable. If people stand two metres from the wall and read fine detail, the bezels are worth putting up with. Control rooms, boardrooms and design studios are the usual cases. Premium LCD also ships factory-calibrated for colour-critical work, where LED needs an analyser at install and periodic recalibration.

What does an LED video wall cost to own, not just to buy?

Budget past the modules. Structure, power, servicing access and spare stock all add cost.

LED cabinets are heavy and need proper structural support behind them. Large walls draw power in kilowatts, so the switchboard may need work before anything gets hung. Neither line item appears on a module quote.

If your modules are rear-serviced only, you need permanent access behind the wall. Build a wall flush into a joinery run without that access and a single failed module means dismantling the install.

Insist on front-serviceable modules and same-batch LEDs across the whole wall. LEDs are manufactured in batches and drift in colour as they age. A brand-new spare module dropped into a two-year-old wall will not match the panels either side of it.

Order spares at the same time as the wall, from the same batch, because a matching spare does not exist in year three. Our delivery and installation team scopes structure, power and access before anything is ordered.

Have you budgeted for the content?

A custom-shaped wall needs custom-made content, and that cost lands after the install is finished.

A 16:9 screen plays anything your marketing team already has. Ultra-wide, curved and column formats do not, so someone has to build artwork at the wall’s exact resolution and rebuild it every campaign. Without that resource, the wall loops its launch content until it becomes an expensive slideshow.

Before you sign, work out who is making the content and how often it changes. If nobody owns it, choose a smaller screen. Our content design team handles this for clients who would rather not resource it internally.

How do shape and structure change the decision?

LED modules fit spaces that fixed-size panels and projector throw distances cannot.

  • LCD video walls are built from 16:9 panels, so you get rectangles.
  • Projection needs a flat surface, plus clear metres between the lens and the wall, which tight foyers rarely have.
  • LED video walls are modular, so ultra-wide, ultra-tall, curved and wrapped are all buildable.

MECCA’s Melbourne flagship runs 18 displays inside a heritage-listed building on Bourke Street, more than 150 years old. Old buildings rarely give you a flat, square wall you can service, which is why the fitout used modular LED including an industry-first transparent mesh.

We hit the same problem at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth, a heritage venue where we ran a display network through the foyer. Protected fabric, restricted fixings and no depth behind the wall for a projector left modular LED as the only workable option.

The Real Madrid World of Football Experience was a touring exhibition that opened at Melbourne Museum in 2018. We built its 38-panel video wall as a tunnel, 20 panels down one side and 18 down the other. An asymmetric tunnel is not a shape projection or a fixed-panel array can make.

Custom scripting on the BrightSign media players held both walls to an identical frame rate. The whole structure packed up and toured for five years.

What is changing in 2026?

Fine pixel pitch is getting cheaper, and that is changing where the line between LED and LCD sits.

Tight pitches used to carry a hard premium, which is what kept LED out of boardrooms and lobbies. That premium has been falling steadily, so walls that would have been LCD three years ago now come in as LED.

Micro and mini LED are following the same curve at the top end. Neither is mainstream pricing yet, but both are past the trial stage for premium fitouts.

Which should you choose?

  • Light. If the space is bright and stays bright, LED is the only option that holds up.
  • Shape. LED modules build irregular, heritage, curved and shallow-depth walls that fixed-size LCD panels and projector throw distances cannot.
  • Permanence. If the install comes down inside a year, projection is cheaper and you will not miss the difference.

For most permanent installs in bright or awkward Australian spaces, an LED video wall still works in year five.
