The Challenge

For years, His Majesty’s Theatre promoted its events through static printed banners. For a venue running a full, constantly changing season of performances, this created real operational friction. Updating signage required print production lead times, physical installation, and coordination between departments. There was no way to promote multiple upcoming events at once, or to respond quickly when a programme changed.

His Majesty’s Theatre sits on Hay Street, one of Perth CBD’s busiest pedestrian corridors. Any display mounted above that public space requires City of Perth approval. Sections of the footpath must be temporarily zoned off during installation, and structural displays above pedestrians require independent engineer certification.

Amped Digital needed to satisfy all of these requirements while preserving the building’s heritage character and minimising disruption to the surrounding area.

The Solution

Amped Digital designed and delivered a multi-zone digital signage system across three areas: the external Hay Street facade, the theatre foyer, and interior wayfinding and promotional points.

For the outdoor facade, the team specified Samsung outdoor IP-rated digital poster displays with 3,500 nit brightness panels and polarised viewing technology. These maintain strong visibility in full Perth sunlight and are built for permanent outdoor use. Custom LED displays with high-brightness panels were also installed across the facade, adding dynamic visual impact after dark when the theatre’s street presence is at its most prominent.

All displays are fitted with ambient light sensors. Brightness adjusts automatically based on time of day and surrounding light levels. Content stays readable from early morning through to late evening without any manual adjustment.

The system runs on BrightSign media players and is managed through Navori, a cloud-based content management platform that gives the theatre’s marketing and events team direct control over all screens. Staff can publish new content, build schedules, and manage different zones without needing technical support. Engineering and Installation

Installing above pedestrian areas on a heritage-listed building in a busy CBD location required a purpose-built engineering solution. Amped Digital developed custom outdoor digital signage mounts and brackets specifically for this project, working alongside leading engineering and design firms to ensure the structures met all relevant safety standards.

Each bracket was engineered to safely support the weight of the LED and LCD displays above Hay Street foot traffic, with appropriate certification secured before installation began. During the works, sections of the public footpath were zoned off in compliance with City of Perth requirements, protecting the public and the venue’s neighbours while work progressed.

Despite managing heritage constraints, City of Perth approvals, public safety requirements, and bespoke structural engineering, Amped Digital’s delivery and installation team completed the full installation from site access to commissioning in approximately one week.

The Result

The most significant change at His Majesty’s Theatre is the shift from a single static banner to multiple rolling digital promotions displayed simultaneously across the facade and foyer. The venue can now promote an entire season of upcoming events at once, rotating and updating content as the programme evolves. What once required print production and physical installation can be published instantly by the theatre’s own marketing team.

Street visibility has improved materially. The high-brightness LED panels on the Hay Street facade bring the venue to life in a way that static banners never could, particularly at night when the dynamic content draws attention from passing foot and vehicle traffic and adds a vibrant quality to that stretch of the CBD streetscape.

For the marketing and events team, the day-to-day operational benefit is flexibility. Navori allows content to be scheduled well in advance or published immediately, eliminating the delays and interdepartmental coordination that static signage required. The system is designed to suit the fast-moving nature of a performing arts calendar, where last-minute programming changes are part of the job.

Ongoing Support

Amped Digital provides remote monitoring, remote diagnostics, and ongoing system training for the theatre team as required. Ad hoc support is available when needed. The system has been designed for reliability, minimising the need for on-site attendance at a venue with a demanding performance schedule and limited access windows.
