The Challenge
This was a demanding outdoor LED project in one of Western Australia’s more remote towns. Carnarvon sits roughly 900 kilometres north of Perth, in the Gascoyne region.
The distance meant our technicians flew to site, so the work had to be planned in detail. We pre-configured as much as possible before anyone left the office.
Carnarvon is also cyclone-prone. Both the screen and its support structure were engineered to Category 4 cyclone certification. We timed the works outside cyclone season.
The display faces traffic, so it needed sign-off from the local Council and from Main Roads. Amped liaised with both bodies and worked through every approval on the Shire’s behalf. This coordination was a key reason the project ran across many months.
Council also set a limit on how bright the screen can run. The final brightness was tuned to suit the location rather than pushed to the maximum.
Our Solution
Amped Digital designed, supplied and installed a single large outdoor LED display at the Civic Centre. The screen measures 3.84 metres wide by 1.92 metres high and sits in a central spot in town.
The Screen
We specified an Absen A Series outdoor LED with a 4.44 mm pixel pitch. It is IP-rated for outdoor conditions and built to handle the Gascoyne climate.
A built-in brightness sensor adjusts the display to the ambient light through the day. The panel can reach up to 7,500 nits, though day-to-day output stays capped to meet Council requirements. The screen stays clear and readable in full sun, and dims appropriately at night.
Engineered for the Environment
The screen sits in a custom subframe manufactured by Amped. Both the screen and the subframe were engineered to Category 4 cyclone certification.
This work, plus the ordering and manufacture of the screen, took around 12 weeks. Getting the engineering right early kept the on-site install short.
A One-Day Install
To protect the timeline, we pre-assembled and pre-configured the screen at our own premises first. That let us confirm everything worked before a single technician travelled north.
Three technicians then flew to Carnarvon. The screen was craned into place and installed in a single day. Disruption to the Civic Centre stayed minimal.
Content Management
Content runs through Signagelive by Navori, giving the Shire one simple platform to manage the display. Day to day, that means community notices and Shire advertising.
The display is also built for more than rolling notices. The Shire can use it for outdoor community events. It can even run movie or cinema-style screenings through an external device.
The Result
The Shire of Carnarvon has replaced a static sign with a dynamic, Council-managed display in the centre of town. It now carries live community notices and advertising, and stands ready for events and outdoor screenings.
Amped managed the project end to end. We engineered for the climate, handled Council and Main Roads approvals, managed the logistics, and completed the install. The Shire dealt with one team from the first enquiry through to a working screen.
Built for the Whole Community
The display gives Carnarvon a modern, central place to share local information. The Shire can update it in minutes, rather than waiting on a new printed sign.
Because the display is newly installed, performance figures are not yet available. For now, the outcome is a capable screen that is delivered, approved and working.
