The Challenge
Static menus get harder to manage with every store you open.
Pretzel’s menus were printed, which meant physically difficult to reach and slow to change. As the store count grew, the same small edit had to be repeated in every location.
“As our company’s growing bigger, we have more menus. So when we do make a really, really small minor change, it becomes a really big deal.”
Cost pressure made that worse. Rising supplier prices meant Pretzel needed to update menu pricing far more often than the printed format allowed. Each update carried reprint cost, lead time and the risk of stores running mismatched prices.
Pretzel also wanted menus that could do more than list items. Video, photography and rotating carousels were all off the table while the menus stayed on paper.
The Curtin University site added a physical constraint. The store sits in the Curtin Exchange precinct, and its ordering area is a compact servery, so there was no room for standard landscape screens above the counter.
Our Solution
Amped Digital built Pretzel a single networked system for menu content, sized to fit a small servery.
Displays that fit the space
We specified stretched ultra-wide displays for the Curtin servery. These are narrow, letterbox-shaped screens designed for tight horizontal runs above a counter, and they carry a full menu in a fraction of the height a standard display needs. This solution means the menu can be read clearly from the queue without dominating the small store.
One system, every store
Content runs through Fusion Signage, an Australian-built content management system. Fusion Signage develops the platform. Amped configured it for Pretzel’s network, set up the screens against it, and trained the team on running it.
The software only saves time if it is set up correctly for the way the business works. Pretzel now makes a price or menu change once and pushes it to the network, rather than repeating it store by store.
The same system carries the content Pretzel could also not run before, including video, animation and carousels.
A grand opening under threat
Pretzel’s appointed installer withdrew the day before the Curtin store opened. Pretzel called Amped and we arranged a replacement installer within the hour and had the screens fitted the following morning, ahead of the opening.
The store opened on schedule. This is the part of an installation service that never appears on a specification sheet, but it’s the part our clients remember.
The Result
Pretzel manages its menus centrally instead of reprinting them store by store. Menu and pricing changes now go out across the network from one platform. The screens at Curtin fit the servery they were specified for, and the store opened on its planned date.
The wider gain is capacity. Pretzel can open the next store without adding to a printing problem, which is the point of building a network rather than fitting screens. Because the system is managed in-house by Pretzel’s own team, commercial performance figures sit with the client and are not published here.
